What do health experts mean by the term – Daily Vitamin Requirements? What are the factors that hinder proper vitamin intake in our diet? How to overcome vitamin deficiency and achieve proper supplementation? Find the answers here.
“Daily vitamin requirements” is the term that is better known as RDA’s. The acronym RDA stands for “Recommended Daily Allowance”. The Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences/National research Council determine the RDA for each nutrient.
There are many conflicting opinions that you might come across regarding the RDAs. A few health experts are of the view that consuming the vitamins in their RDAs would only prevent vitamin deficiency symptoms, and will not optimize your health.
Therefore, their claim is that you need to consume more (sometimes even much greater) vitamins than the predetermined RDAs.
On the other hand, other experts claim that sufficient amount of vitamins are achieved from food, so there is no need to take any extra supplements. Furthermore, these experts point towards studies that show that taking mega doses (large amounts) of vitamins in supplemental form can even prove to be harmful for your health.
So, how can you decide who is right?
As normal life situations, the truth lies somewhere in between the two extremes.
Let us make it clear. It is true that taking large dosages of the daily vitamin requirements can lead to harmful health consequences. This applies to a greater degree to the fat soluble vitamins such as vitamin A and vitamin E.
Our body stores these vitamins in the adipose (fat) tissues and cannot dispose them off readily. This can lead to serious side effects and toxicity symptoms.
In fact, serious side effects such as formation of kidney stones, have also been reported on the excessive intake of water-soluble vitamins (that are easily excretable) such as vitamin C.
Likewise, we all are aware of the fact that vitamins play a crucial role in our optimal health and well-being. So, we need to consume the daily vitamin requirements regularly.
However, the fact is that most of us do not consume the daily vitamin RDAs through food sources. There are many reasons behind this phenomenon.
Reasons for Vitamin Nutritional Deficiency
The prime reason why the average Westerner is not getting his/her daily vitamin requirements is that the agricultural soil on which the crops are grown has diminished significantly in terms of its nutritive content as compared to a few generations ago.
The modern farming practices have eroded the mineral and vitamin content of the soil. So, unless your diet is composed of only organic produce (which is not the case with most people), you might not be getting your daily vitamin requirements (or mineral requirements).
Therefore, with regards to the proper intake of our daily vitamins, we are not supportive of taking mega doses of minerals and vitamins.
However, we also believe that a large majority of people residing in the Western world are not getting the adequate mineral and vitamin supplementation through their diet.
Therefore, they should consider nutritional supplementation — provided they use a high quality supplement that contains all the necessary minerals, vitamins and nutrients — but not their mega doses.
Many people are not aware of the fact that there exist a lot of powerful nutrients that have the ability to improve one’s health dramatically — and they are not minerals and vitamins. Instead they are herbal extracts, speciality nutrients and enzymes such as CoQ10, lutein, resveratrol, zeaxanthin and many more.
